I broke my foot about a week ago now. How? I was playing charades. What was I miming? Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Did we still win the point? You bet your ass.

Now I can whine and mope about how it sucks to be walking around in a boot and on crutches for the next 2 months. Or I can look on the bright side and make the most of my immobility. After all, if breaking a leg while acting is supposedly good luck, I guess breaking your foot while playing charades is a pretty close second. So let’s dive in.

Finding new hobbies

Over the past year or so I’ve participated in a number of hobbies, including hiking, biking, running, salsa dancing, DnD, and writing (this blog). Of these, only the last 2 are left considering I can’t walk properly (and my DnD campaign ends next week), so we’re in a bit of a pickle for finding stuff to do - especially since next semester I’m only taking 3 courses. So I need to find some new hobbies. But temporary hobbies, because I’m not planning on ditching my old ones when my foot heals. Some hobbies I want to pick up over the next 2 months include:

  • Reading
  • Sewing (specifically, I want to learn to adjust clothing to make it fit better)
  • And maybe finally learning vim motions

Doing other important things

As I’m moving into my final year at university, there is one very important thing I need to do: find a job before I graduate. That means applying, working on personal projects, and going to job fairs (maybe they’ll take pity on me with my broken foot and hire me 🥹). Grinding these things out now feels like the perfect time, because if I can secure a job before my foot heals, I’ll be chilling for the next 6 months. Easier said than done, though.

Achieving all this will need more concrete planning. Most of these are still just rough ideas in my head. Really, I probably won’t know 100% what I’m doing until clubs day. But I’m strangely looking forward to it.

Hasta la vista, Ahren
